About St Luke’s Church

Team Vicar: Revd Matt Malins
Church Wardens: Iain Hall & Kay Pickford
Safeguarding Officer: Barry Wilson
Parish Administrator: Tina Mycock

St. Luke’s was consecrated as a church building in December 1848, over 160 years ago. Although now part of the Anglican Team of Leek & Meerbrook, originally St. Luke’s was the Parish Church, along with its Mission Church of St. Paul’s, of the eastern side of Leek, but the parish also extended out of the town up to and including the village of Thorncliffe.

Today there are usually 2 services on a Sunday morning at 9.30am and 11.15am. The different services reflect the wide range of worship styles and preferences that make up the St. Luke’s Church family from a more formal communion service to a Family Service using modern worship songs from Spring Harvest and Keswick to traditional services from the Book of Common Prayer. On special times of the year, eg Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and Harvest the 2 Sunday morning congregations meet together and there are also occasional joint services between the 2 Family Service congregations at St. Luke’s and St. Paul’s.

There is much lay participation in leading services, preaching, reading the Scriptures and leading prayers, and at all our services as we seek to praise God in a joyful way and also take seriously listening to the Word of God as it is read and explained week by week. This is seen as key to growing in faith ourselves and being equipped to reach out to others. One of the key aims of recent times at St. Luke’s is “to reach out and draw in”.

The Church Centre at the western end of the building was refurbished back in 1996 and has won awards and is often visited by members of other churches looking for ideas for re-ordering their own buildings. The Centre is much used by church and community groups and includes the Church Office which is open and manned every weekday morning as a point of contact for both church member and visitor alike, but also to keep the church building open more for quiet prayer and reflection, as a resource for all those who pass by.

St Luke’s Church Children’s Groups

Seedlings Fun, Faith and Friendship – We meet every Thursday morning in term time from 10.00 to 11.30 am in St Luke’s Church Centre. We welcome pre-school children and their carers – Mums, Dads, Nans, childminders etc.

The group starts with a play session and sometimes there will be a craft activity linked to our theme, which you can help your child with if you wish. After this we clear away the toys and the children sit down for juice, fruit and toast.

At the end of the morning we join together for a circle time. This is when we use a variety of games, action songs and simple stories to share Christian beliefs.  All are welcome but in December please phone for availability as on party days the numbers are limited.

Pastoral Care in Bereavement

Our bereavement support group was set up some years ago, with a view to giving pastoral support to bereaved families. We are not counsellors, our aim is to befriend a grieving person, by offering support and being along side them in their pain and to be sensitive to their needs. Maybe they just want someone to sit and listen as they unburden themselves. (In listening the bereavement visitor can pick up how the grieving person is coping and if more professional counselling is needed.)

Once a year a special memorial service is held for those who have lost a loved one in the previous 12 months.

On the first anniversary of the death a prayer card is sent to the bereaved family, to show we have not forgotten them and they will be mentioned in our prayers during that week.

We find our pastoral services given to the bereaved is very much appreciated. For more information, please contact Hazel Henshaw on 01538 382603.
